Rishikesh lies on the banks of the river Ganges with the Himalayan Mountains as the backdrop. The peaceful Ganges provides a perfect foil to the chaos of vibrant Rishikesh with its narrow lanes, blaring loudspeaker & three wheeler traffic, the Himalayas, the divine morning, the starry evening, the faint strains of shastriya sangeet ( classical music ) in the air, the smell of incense - Rishikesh is all this and more. Unlike Varanasi, however, Rishikesh is subtle and reverence it commands. And thoughthe signs are everywhere - Sadhu bathing in the holy river, foreigners in saffron "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" kurtas, the constant chime of temple bells - none are overwhelming.

Unlike most other holy Indian cities, Rishikesh is a unique for the minf and body. It's a city where ancient religious traditions exist happily together with youthful, adventurous sports. While on the one hand it offers a profound, spiritual expedition, it also tempts uou with heady, bodily diversions - white water rafting and challenging treks, In essence, Rishikesh, split by the Ganges into two, is a microcosm of India - unruly and brash, sombre and soothing, what better antidote to the city blues than a weekend break in this beautiful Dev Bhoomi - the land of the Gods.

Attractions in Rishikesh
Some come to seek nirvana, others to discover Yoga and some come here to do adventure activities like white water rafting and trekking. Other attractions are - Lakshaman Jhula, Shivananda Ashram, Nilkanth Mahadeo, Tapovan. The Laxman Jhoola and Ram Jhoola, pedestrian suspension bridges across the river Ganges, lead to temples with idols of Hindu devotities.

Getting There
Air: The nearest airport to Rishikesh is Jolly Grant. This small airport is situated at a distance of about 24 km from the main Rishikesh town. However, air is not the preferred mode of transport for getting into the town. Reach Delhi International airport in India and take a train or bus route to Rishikesh.

Rail: Rishikesh is connected by rail via Haridwar, which is on the main route. Haridwar is connected directly with Mumbai, Lucknow, Howrah, Kalka, Sri Ganganagar, Allahabad and Delhi.

Road: Rishikesh is well connected by road with all major cities in the state.

Shopping in Rishikesh :
 Being a pilgrimage place, the glamour of big shop bargains is absent but Rishikesh offers you handicraft items made of shells, beads and pearls. Sarees, kurtas, sheets and rugs can be purchased from here. Sarees, Kurtas, sheets and rugs can be purchased from here. You can buy these items from the government approved U.P handloom shop, Khadi Bhandar, Garhwal wool and craft shop etc.
